Nikolai Mikhailovich Budarin was born on 29 April 1953 in Kiry settlement, Alatyrsky district, Chuvash Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, RSFSR |(now Kirya, Chuvashia, Russian Federation). His father, Mikhail Romanovich Budarin, died in 1984. His mother, Alexandra Mikhailovna Budarina, died in 1986.
Education
In 1970, he finished 10 grades of secondary school. In 1979, he graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) named after Sergo Ordzhonikidze, specialty aerospace engineering, received a diploma of a mechanical engineer. In 1981 he graduated from the Marxism-Leninism University in Kaliningrad.
Career
In 1970 - 1971 he worked as a laboratory assistant in secondary school No. 7 in Shchelkovo, Moscow Region. In 1974 – 1976, he worked as an adjuster at the plant named after the 50th anniversary of the Great October Revolution in Fryazino. Since 1976, he worked at the NPO Energia. At first he was an electrician, since 1978 - a master in electrical equipment, since 1982 - a test engineer, since 1986 - the head of the group, since 1988 - a leading specialist, the head of the group at the Control and Test Station.
He underwent a medical examination at the Institute for Bio-Medical Problems (IBMP) and on 26 February 1986, he was admitted to special training. By decision of the State Interdepartmental Commission (SIMC) dated 25 January 1989, he was selected as a candidate in Cosmonaut Corps of the NPO Energia. On 27 February 1989, he was appointed to the position of candidate-cosmonaut-testers of the NPO Energia 291st division.
From September 1989 to January 1991, passed general space training (GST) at the Yu. A. Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. On 1 February 1991, by decision of the Interdepartmental Qualification Commission (IQC), he was given the qualification of a test cosmonaut. In February 1991, he was appointed to the position of test cosmonaut of the NPO Energia 291st division (Cosmonaut Corps). From April 1991 to March 1994, he was trained as a member of the cosmonauts group under the Mir program. From May 1994 to February 1995, he was trained as a flight engineer of the backup crew of the Soyuz TM-21 spacecraft under the EO-18 program to Mir space station together with A. Soloviev and the NASA-l program together with B. Dunbar (USA).
Simultaneously he was trained as a flight engineer of the primary crew at Mir station under the EO-19 program, together with A. Soloviev. During the start of the Soyuz TM-21 TC on 14 March 1995, was the backup engineer of the ship. From 27 March to 12 May 1995, he underwent direct training for the flight under the EO-19 program to the Mir Space Center as a flight engineer of the first crew, together with A. Soloviev. From 15 May to 26 June 1995, he was trained in the US for the Atlantis STS-71 shuttle mission program.
1st flight – 27 June – 11 September 1995, as a flight engineer to Mir under the EO-19 program (19th main Expedition) together with A. Soloviev. The crew was first delivered to the station on the Atlantis STS-71 US shuttle. Landed on the Soyuz TM-21 jointly with A. Soloviev. During the flight he made three spacewalks for a total of 14 hours 32 minutes. Flight Duration: 75 days 11 hours 20 minutes 21 seconds. Call sign: Spring-2.
2nd flight – 29 January - 25 August 1998 as a flight engineer of Soyuz TM-27 and Mir under the EO-25 program (25th main Expedition) together with T. Musabaev. Started with T. Musabaev and L. Ayartz. He landed together with T. Musabaev and Yu. Baturin. During the flight he made five spacewalks for a total of 30 hours 14 minutes. Flight duration: 207 days 12 hours 51 minutes 02 seconds. Call sign: Crystal-2.
3rd flight – 24 November 2002 – 4 May 2003, as flight engineer of the 6th ISS Expedition.
Started on 24 November 2002, on the Endeavor STS-113 shuttle as a flight specialist, landing on the Soyuz TMA-1 transport ship on 4 May 2003, as a ship commander (ballistic descent). Flight duration: 161 days 1 hour 14 minutes 38 seconds.
By order of the head of the Federal Space Agency No. 69 dated 7 September 2004, the pilot-cosmonaut of the Russian Federation, Nikolai Mikhailovich Budarin was dismissed from the position of the 1st class instructor-cosmonaut-tester at his own request.
