In 1958, Aleksandr studied at graduated 10 classes of secondary school №1 in city Ivanteyevka. In 1964, graduated from the Moscow aviation institute (MAI) named after Sergo Ordzhonikidze. In 1970, he studied at training courses at MAI, learned programming on a ECM.

He passed a medical examination at the Institute of biomedical problems (IBMP) and on November 1, 1971 received the conclusion of the Main medical Commission (CMC) on suitability for special trainings. From May 1973 to November 1974 he passed training under the program of EPAS as a flight engineer of the second (backup) crew for the first test flight together with Yu. Romanenko. Twice was on a business trip in the US for training at NASA. During the launch of spacecraft “Soyuz-16” on December 2, 1974 he was the backup of the flight engineer of the spacecraft.
From January to June 1975 he passed training as flight engineer of the third crew of the spacecraft "Soyuz-19" on the programme EPAS, together with Yu. Romanenko.
From September 1975 to September 1977, he trained for flight on the DOS 5 "Salyut - b" according to the program of the first main expedition (EO-1) as a flight engineer of the second crew, together with Yu. Romanenko. During the launch of “Soyuz-25” on October 9, 1977 he was the backup of the flight engineer of the spacecraft. After the docking did not take place, the crews who were on training, were reorganized so that each entered one flying astronaut.
In October-December 1977 he passed training for the flight to DOS-5 "Salyut-6" on the programs of EO-1 and the first visiting expedition (EP-1) as flight engineer of the second crew together with V. Kovalenko. He was a backup of flight engineer “Soyuz-26” (launch on December 10, 1977, EO-1) and “Soyuz-27” (launch on January 10, 1978, EP-1).
From January to June 1978 he passed training for the flight to DOS-5 "Salyut-6" on the program of the second prime expedition (EO-2) as flight engineer of the first crew, together with V. Kovalenko.
