Nikolai Zaharovich Yagovdik was a Belarusian physician, dermatologist, venereologist, professor, and medical researcher. He studied the metabolic and endocrine mechanisms of chronic dermatoses, developed treatments for psoriasis and neurodermatitis, authored or co-authored numerous medical books and scientific works, and led Belarus's Republican Scientific Society of Dermatovenereologists from 1987 to 2011.
Background
Nikolai Zaharovich Yagovdik was born on August 15, 1931, in the village of Kutseyki in Slonim District of the Grodno Region of Belarus. His professional life was devoted to dermatology, venereology, medical research, and the training of physicians in Belarus.
Education
Yagovdik graduated from the Minsk State Medical Institute in 1953 with a Doctor of Medicine qualification. From 1953 to 1956 he completed clinical residency training in dermatovenereology at the institute's Department of Dermatology and Venereal Diseases. He then pursued postgraduate study from 1956 to 1959 in the Gerontology Sector of the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR. He later obtained a Doctor of Philosophy qualification from the Belarusian Academy of Sciences and a Doctor of Science qualification in the field of health-care systems in Belarus.
Career
Yagovdik began his research career in 1959 as a researcher in the Department of Gerontology of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus. From 1963 to 1969 he headed the biochemical laboratory of the Belarusian health-care system, and from 1969 to 1986 he served as associate director of the Institute of Science Research in Dermatology and Venereology, with responsibility for scientific work. In 1986 he became head of the Department of Dermatology and Venereology at Belarusian State Medical University, a position he held until 1997, and from 1997 to 2012 he was a professor of the department. He also worked as a consulting physician at the Dermatology and Venereology Center from 1986 to 2012 and served as an expert of the Highest Certifying Committee from 1986 to 1991. In 1990, he was appointed scientific director of the Laboratory for Dermatology and Venereology Problems at the Central Research Laboratory of the Minsk Medical Institute, later associated with Belarusian State Medical University, which functioned as a republican scientific and methodological center for dermatology and venereal diseases. His research examined metabolic processes, endocrine regulation, trace elements, enzyme activity, immune mechanisms, and other biological factors involved in chronic dermatoses, particularly psoriasis, eczema, atopic dermatitis, acne, gonorrhea, and neurodermatoses. He was among the early Soviet researchers to study trace elements in human skin during ontogenesis and in patients with eczema and psoriasis. His work contributed to treatment approaches involving phytotherapy, physiotherapy, photochemotherapy, lithium carbonate, PUVA therapy, and other methods. He authored approximately 380 scientific articles and conference theses, nine books and reference works, thirteen methodological and teaching-methodological recommendations, three inventions, and eighteen rationalization proposals. Under his supervision, three doctoral and ten candidate dissertations were defended.
Achievements
Developed and investigated treatment methods for diffuse neurodermatitis, including a method combining PUVA photochemotherapy with oral lithium carbonate.
Advanced research into the metabolic, endocrine, enzymatic, immunological, and trace-element mechanisms involved in psoriasis and other chronic dermatoses.
Supervised the defense of three doctoral and ten candidate dissertations in dermatology and venereology.
Authored approximately 380 scientific articles and theses, nine books and reference works, thirteen methodological and teaching-methodological recommendations, three inventions, and eighteen rationalization proposals.
