Worked at various plants in Saint St. Petersburg. 1908 founded Marxist circle in youth organisation. From 1910 in trade-union movement.
1913 elected Board member, Trade and Indiana Workers’ Union. 1914 secretary. Sick Fund, Putivi’ Plant. 1915 organized Russian Social-Democratic Workers ’Party (Bolsheviks) Rayon Committee at “Skorokhod" Plant.
1916 drafted into Tsarist Army and founded two military Party cells. February 1917 arrested but escaped and continued Party work in Saint St. Petersburg’s Lesnoy Rayon. After 1917 February Revol served in workers’ insurance agency.
Member, Petrograd Soviet;July 1917 sentenced to death by regt tribunal for his part in July demonstration, but was released by soldiers of his company. During the Kornilov affair commanded Red Guards of Moscow-Narva Rayon and directed defense of main sector on approaches to Petrograd. Won over first units of so-called “Savage Division” to Bolshevik cause.
