Tikhon (Nikolay Vasilevsky) was born on May 1, 1867, in Poltava, Poltavs'ka Oblast', Ukraine in the family of a Psalmist.
Tikhon received his basic education at the Poltava theological school and the Poltava and Kyiv theological seminaries. He graduated from the Kyiv Theological Seminary (1887), Kyiv Theological Academy (1891).
Tikhon achieved great success in his career. He was an inspector of the Ladin Diocesan University School of the Poltava eparchy (1891-1892); the teacher of Kherson (1892-1893), Poltava (1893-1895) Theological School.
In 1895 accepted monasticism. Tikhon worked as an inspector of the Tomsk Theological Seminary (1895-1897); inspector (1897-1898), rector (1898-1903) of the Minsk Theological Seminary; Bishop of Balta, Vicar of the eparchy of Kamianets-Podil (1903-1905), Kostroma and Galich (1905-1914; since 1913 Archbishop); Archbishop Kursk and Oboyan (1914-1917).
Since 1917, the rector of Trinity Monastery of Kalyazin of the Tver eparchy. Temporarily managed Alatyrsky Vicariate of the eparchy of Simbirsk (1918-1919). Archbishop of Voronezh and Zadonsky (since 1920). Tikhon participated in the message of the "Charter" to Patriarch Gregory VII in 1924. In 1925, he participated in the Renovations of the local Cathedral in Moscow.
Tikhon was known as one of the participants of the movement of the split of the Russian Orthodox Church (Renovations).
