Tikhon (Vasily Nikanorov) was born on January 30, 1855, in Novgorod, Russian Federation.
Tikhon received his initial religious and secular education at home. Then he completed the Kirillov Theological School and entered the Novgorod Theological Seminary, and after he graduated in 1877 the Saint Petersburg Theological Academy (1881).
Tikhon devoted his entire life to serving God. In this activity, he achieved a lot (he was both a teacher and a monk). From 1881 to 1884, Tikhon was a caretaker's assistant at the Belozersky Spiritual School. In 1884, he was appointed inspector of the Novgorod Theological Seminary. Then Tikhon became rector of the same Seminary (1890-1892). At the same time was the Abbot of the Novgorod Antoniev monastery (1890-1892).
Tikhon has the following titles: Bishop of Mozhaisk, Vicar of the Moscow eparchy (1892-1899), Polotsk and Vitebsk (1899-1902), Penza, and Saransk (1902-1907), Bishop of Kaluga and Borovsky (1912-1913), Archbishop of Voronezh and Zadonsky (since 1913).
Since 1907, Tikhon was the Abbot of the Moscow Voskresensky New Jerusalem monastery. During the 1st world war, he managed the Church and charity activities of the eparchy. He participated in the work of the Pomestny Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in 1917-1918. Also, he was an honorable member of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society.
Vasily Nikanorov was known for his simplicity, tenderness, and honest manner of communication. He had never been irritated or angry.
