Nikolay Sergeevich was orphaned at the age of 11 and was brought up by his maternal uncle, Pyotr Yakovlevich Chernyavsky, who sent him to a German boarding school in Saint Petersburg. He graduated from a German boarding school in Saint Petersburg and served in the Semyonovsky regiment (1793-1797).
