Background
Otomo Yoshinao lived in the 1180th. Son of Yoshishige Kondo, he was raised by Chikayoshi Nakahara and assumed the family name of Otomo, thereby becoming the fountainhead of the Otomo family. His descendants prospered in Kyushu.

He was a chieftain under Yoritomo Minamoto. Was appointed Sakon-e-no-Shogen (Chief Guard of the Court Gate), rendered distinguished services in northern Japan, was favored by Yoritomo and made Magistrate of Bungo Province (Oita Prefecture) and Governor of Chinzei (Kyushu).
