From age ten worked at Sestroretsk Arms Plant. Later at semyannikov Shipyard. From 1905 in revol movement.
1912 arrested and drafted into Russian Army. Foreign his refusal to take the oath and for revol propaganda sentenced to eight years’ hard labor. Confined at Shlissel’burg Fortress and Alexandrine Centr Jail.
After 1917 February Revol returned to Petrograd. Helped storm Winter Palace. February 1918 sent by People's Commissariat of Food to Arkhangel’sk to organize food supply for Petrograd.
Arranged dispatch of over 160 tons of grain to Petrograd. Deputy chairman, Arkhangel’sk Oblast Executive Committee. July 1918 directed suppression of anti-Soviet revolt in Shenkur Uyezd.
August 1918 founder and commander, Northern Dvina Flotilla. 10 August 1918 commanded battle against enemy ships near Bereznik.
