Pu-Lai Chen

Background

Mr. Chen was born in Ningbo, Zhejiang, China, in 1890.

Education

Chen Pu-Lai graduated from the Zhejiang Provincial College, Hangzhou.

Career

Mr. Chen was a contributing editor of the Tien Too Poo and Shun Pao in Shanghai. He taught at the 4th Middle School and the Technical High School of Ningbo for eight years. Then Chen Pu-Lai held the post of a chief editor of Shanghai Journal of Commerce, Shanghai, for six years, during which time he was also an editor of the Commercial Press. Mr. Chen served as a chief secretary of Zhejiang Provincial Government in 1927.

Chen Pu-Lai was appointed chief secretary of the Central Executive Committee of Kuomintang in the summer of 1927, but resigned in September of the same year. He took up the post of a chief editor of the China Times Shanghai in 1928. Mr. Chen acted as a commissioner of Education of Zhejiang since 1929. In 1931 he was appointed vice-Minister of Education. Mr. Chen was an acting director of the Publicity Department of Central Party Headquarters, Nanjing, in 1931. He was a member of Zhejiang Provincial Government and concurrently commissioner of Education between 1932 and 1934.

Since 1931 Mr. Chen became a member of the Central Supervisory Committee. He served as a secretary to General Chiang Kai-shek in 1935.

Achievements

• Chen Pu-Lai occupied many major official positions in China as well as assisted in the compilation of the Webster's Collegiate Dictionary with Chinese Translations.
