Ren was born in Tianjin, China, in 1976.
Ren Zhen Yu graduated in 1999 from the Oil Painting Department at Tianjin Academy of Fine Art.
Ren works as a lecturer at Tianjin Academy of Fine Art. Concurrently, he devotes a lot of time and energy to his oeuvre. His artworks have been represented in several exhibitions in China and are spreading globally. More recently he also has gained fame in Europe.
In his paintings, Ren Zhen Yu plays with layering to reinforce the portrayal of faces from different perspectives. His manner of painting is closer to Pop Art than to the currently dominant Chinese Neo-Realist style. He combines contemporary perspective together with the history and memories attached to the historic icons, which he depicts. The artist nicely controls the interaction between brightness and colour to present the dissimilarity of the icons he chooses to represent.
Ren's technique is absolutely different from many artists who have previously painted similar iconic images. The artist wanted his work to be unclear and soft, and, as a result, the blurred face emerged in new forms.
Ren Zhen Yu is considered to be one of the most admirable artists of our time. His talent was acknowledged and appreciated by major galleries and prominent collectors throughout China. Besides, he achieved fame in Europe for his distinct portrait series of historical and political icons, including Andy Warhol and Chairman Mao Zedong.
In 1998 Ren was awarded the 7th National Oil Painting Scholarship and in 2007 the Gathering Sandcastle - 2007 New Elite Award, Beijing.
