Richard Gordon James Sadler was born on November 8, 1927, in Coventry, United Kingdom.
Richard Gordon Sadler attended Coventry School of Art and Design and Coventry Technical College (now City College Coventry) between 1943 and 1948. He later completed advanced color process courses at Agfa in Germany, Gevaert in Belgium, and Kodak and Ilford in England (1957-1962).
Since 1975 Richard Gordon Sadler has been a senior lecturer in the School of Photography, Derby Lonsdale College of Higher Education, and he also taught there (1969-1972). From 1972 to 1975 he was a joint tutor in a course run with Trent Polytechnical College, and from 1962 to 1968 he taught at Coventry College of Art and Design and ran his own commercial studios in London and in Coventry. In the 1950s the photographer was mainly concerned with "the print and social documentation".
