Robert Erikson was born on May 31, 1938 in Stockholm, Sweden. His parents were Arvid Erikson, an accountant, and Agnes (Fürst) Erikson.
Robert Erikson received his Bachelor of Arts from Stockholm University in 1961. He then earned his Master of Arts in Sociology in 1964 and his Doctor of Philosophy in 1971, both from Stockholm University.
Robert Erikson was an assistant teacher, lecturer, and reader in sociology at Stockholm University during 1961-1972. He also worked as a professor of city planning at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm in 1976. In 1978 Erikson was a professor of social ecology.
He worked as a senior research officer at the Swedish Institute for Social Research from 1973 to 1981.
In 1982 he became a professor of sociology at Stockholm University.
Robert Erikson also became secretary-general at Swedish Council for Social Research in 1997.
In addition, he was the author of "The Constant Flux: A Study of Class Mobility in Industrial Societies", together with John H. Goldthorpe.

1987Robert Erikson has been a fellow of British Academy, Academia Europaea, Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences. He has also been a member of the Swedish Institute for Social Research since 1986.
Robert Erikson married Margareta Berglund, a psychologist, in 1963. The couple has two daughters - Lotta Kristina and Marja Birgitta.
