Robert attended the University of Florence and graduated from Georgetown University with a B.S. (summa cum laude) in 1980. Then he received his M.A.Th. from Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in 1983. In 1986 he gained an M.S. from California State University, Hayward.
Hopcke worked at Unitas Personal Counseling, Berkeley, California as senior intern from 1981 until 1986, then as staff clinical supervisor from 1986 until 1989. Thereafter he was a coordinator of AIDS Prevention Program at Operation Concern, San Francisco, California from 1989 until 1995, then he began private practice of psychotherapy and couples counseling, since 1995. Since 1990 he has been co-founder and director at the Center of Symbolic Studies.
Hopcke is known internationally for his ground-breaking work within Jungian psychology, including the 1997 national bestseller "There Are No Accidents", translated into dozens of languages. He is the author of the first full-length work in English on homosexuality within the field of analytical psychology "Jung, Jungians and Homosexuality".
He has been a member of California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists.
