Robert Pool received a Bachelor of Arts from Rice University in 1977. He also holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree.
Robert Pool has taught science writing at Johns Hopkins University and has worked as a writer and editor at the world's two most prestigious science publications Science and Nature.
His book Eve's Rib: Searching for the Biological Roots of Sex Differences presents the results of studies in many scientific fields, as well as other findings, regarding the hormonal environment in the womb and its influence on the child. According to Pool, exposure to hormones such as testosterone or estrogen in the womb leads the child to become either male or female and to express preferences for gender-specific activities during childhood. In addition, as the child develops, hormones continue to propel the child toward male or female aptitudes and activities.
In Beyond Engineering: How Society Shapes Technology, Pool examines the development of modern technology but emphasizes the ways in which non-technological factors such as social and political events have shaped the growth of technology. In Fat: Fighting the Obesity Epidemic, Pool investigates why people get fat, why some get fat more easily than others, why it is so hard to lose weight, how genes influence one’s weight, and why, when people lose weight, they regain it so easily. He presents stories of scientific research on obesity ranging from the early twentieth century to today, including genetic research, fat-fighting drugs, and numerous anecdotes about the scientists and their subjects.
Robert co-authored his latest book Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise with Anders Ericsson.
Pool has also provided writing and consulting services for such prestigious groups as the National Academies. He has written hundreds of important books and reports for the academies, covering such topics as homeland security, intelligence and counterintelligence, vaccine safety, transportation safety, pollinator collapse, the obesity epidemic, forensics in the courtroom, literacy and education, etc. In addition to books, Robert Pool has participated in and served as rapporteur and author for numerous national and international think tank.
In addition to Peak, Pool has written many other successful books - four for a general audience, including Bringing Public Health into Urban Revitalization.
