Sandra Deer was born on December 21, 1940, in Florida. She is a daughter of Mildred Virginia (Sims) Deer.
Sandra Deer studied at Wesleyan College and in 1962 received a Bachelor of Arts degree. Then she studied at Florida State University where she received a Master of Arts degree in 1965.
Sandra Deer started her career as an instructor at Georgia State University in 1966. Later she became an editor at Atlanta Gazette and in 1984 she took up a post of literary manager at Alliance Theatre. In 1986 she wrote her first play So Long on Lonely Street. Her next play, Sailing to Byzantium, was performed in an Ashland New Plays Festival Reading production at the Carpenter Hall in Ashland, Oregon. Sandra Deer also worked as a teacher of creative writing at Agnes Scott College, Mercer, and Emory Universities.
