Satake Yoshishige was born on 1547 in Hitachi Province, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. He was the eldest son of Yoshiaki.

Satake Yoshishige was born on 1547 in Hitachi Province, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. He was the eldest son of Yoshiaki.
In Yoshishige's days, the family ruled over a territory with 540,000 koku of rice a year. With ota Castle (Ibaraki Prefecture) as his headquarters, Yoshishige served Nobunaga Oda and, after Nobunaga died, Hideyoshi Toyotomi. Fought the Hojos often in Hitachi and Shimotsuke provinces (Ibaraki and Tochigi prefectures, respectively).
Although he retired as family in favor of Yoshinobu (1586), he continued to control the territory, holding his own against Masamune Date in Sendai.
In the Sekigahara Battle (1600), he was on the side of Mitsunari Ishida of the Toyotomi Camp. Ieyasu transferred him to Akita. A valiant warrior in the battlefield, he was called Oni Yoshishige (Yoshishige the Devil), but was a genial lord to his people.
