Sei-ichi Terao was born in 1868 in Nagoya, Japan.
He graduated from Tokyo University with a degree in shipbuilding (1890).
Sei-ichi Terao became an assistant professor at his alma mater (1892). Four years later he was sent abroad for further studies (1896) and upon returning home joined his alma mater as professor (1898).
After this his rise was steady: Chief engineer at Tokyo University (1918), member of the committee formed for the creation of engineering studies at Kyushu and Hokkaido universities (1919), first chief of Aeronautics Research Institute (1920), later he was on the committee for the formation of a shipbuilding society.
Sei-ichi Terao founded the Japan Marine Society and designed the Tenyo Maru and Chiyo Maru, the two biggest ships built during the Taisho Era. It was mainly due to his efforts that the shipbuilding industry became a private enterprise in Japan. He wrote many valuable treatises on shipbuilding and his general contribution to engineering circles was most valuable.
He was a man of noble character and respected by all he came into contact with.
