Seiroku Honda was born in 1866. His original family name was Orihara.
Graduated from the Agricultural Department, Tokyo University (1890). After graduating from the Tokyo University, he studied at Munich University and other institutions in Germany.
After returning to Japan, he was appointed assistant professor and then professor at his alma mater. Won his doctorate (1900). Was president of the Japan Garden Association, Japan Scenic Beauty Association, Japan Civic Beauty and Japan Garden Architectural Associations. Designed Tokyo's Hibiya Park and the outer gardens of the Meiji Shrine and other noted public parks. Was made professor emeritus at Tokyo University (1927). Wrote some 300 books on forestry. Was noted for his aavocacy of thrifty living.
