After graduation from the school, Sergei Ambartsumyan entered the construction department of the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute, graduating in 1975 with a specialty "civil engineer".
Sergey Alexandrovich Ambartsumyan began his career as an engineer in the trust Armtransstroy of Ministry of Transport Construction. Sergey Alexandrovich asked for participation in the construction of a railway near Yerevan. He worked as a foreman. In two years he was called up for military service, then for three months served as a lieutenant in the building battalion on the construction of the first block of Inguri hydro-electric power station. Later his unit was transferred to the construction of the first block of Smolensk Atomic Power Station, where he did military service until demobilization. On his return from the army Ambartsumyan was seeking a referral to full-time postgraduate study at the Moscow Civil Engineering Institute and in 1981 moved to the capital together with his wife. After graduating from the postgraduate studies and Ph.D. defense, he was offered a job in Lobnya near Moscow, in the newly created headquarter for monolithic housing construction. However, he turned down this proposal and in 1986 came back with his family to Armenia.
For some time, Sergey Ambartsumyan worked at Armtransstroy as a deputy chief engineer of the trust, then he passed a competition for the position of assistant professor at the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute. Later Sergey Alexandrovich became vice-rector for construction and economic work of Architectural and Construction Institute which was established after a devastating earthquake in the republic (December 1988).
In 1994, Sergey Alexandrovich created his first private construction company ACMA (architecture, construction, management, art). In 1996, he was invited to work in PJSC Mospromstroy, where he takes part in the implementation of the most complicated project the reconstruction of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. In 1999, took place a creation of a new company Monarch and C (monolithic architecture and construction). Later Sergey Alexandrovich was invited to one of the leading construction companies of the capital Glavmosstroy for the post of senior vice-president.
In 2003, Sergey Alexandrovich established the Concern Monarch. From 2003 to 2007, he worked as a deputy head of one of the key departments in the structure of the capital construction complex - Department of City-Building Policy, Development and Reconstruction of the city. He is the founder and CEO of the concern Monarch which is a unique large construction organization in Moscow.
