Sergey Nikolayevich was born on January 20, 1847 in Borisoglebsk, Voronezh region, in a noble family. He spent his childhood in his father’s estate (Nikolskoye-Kabanye village, Borisoglebsky district).

Sergey Nikolayevich was born on January 20, 1847 in Borisoglebsk, Voronezh region, in a noble family. He spent his childhood in his father’s estate (Nikolskoye-Kabanye village, Borisoglebsky district).
In 1865, Sergey Nikolayevich ggraduated from the Mikhailovsky Cadet Corps, Voronezh. One of his teachers there was Mikhail De Pulet, and he was on friendly terms with Nikolay Bazhin. In 1867, he graduated from the First Pavel Military School, Saint Petersburg. In 1868, Sergey Nikolayevich entered the Technological Institute where he studied for 2 years.
Since 1869 to 1871 Sergey Nikolayevich was a Borisoglebsk Populist Circle member. In the 1870s, he organized an experimental agricultural colony near Tuapse. Since 1873 he had his works published in a literary magazine "Otechestvennye Zapiski", since 1881 he chronicled Russia's interior life there.
As Sergey Nikolayevich participated in the Populist movement, he was arrested (1883) and transported to Western Siberia (1885-1888). Later he worked for the magazines "Severnyy Vestnik", "Russkoye Bogatstvo", "Novoye Slovo". In the early 1900s, he quitted journalism and moved to the Caucasus.
Sergey Nikolayevich wrote memoirs about Vsevolod Garshin, Ivan Turgenev, Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin, Grigory Eliseev. He is the author of the first biographic book on M. Saltykov-Shchedrin.
