Shawn Alyne Strannigan was born on June 18, 1956, in Topeka, Kansas, United States. She is a daughter of Daniel B. Hurley, a financial consultant, and Barbara (Thurow) Hurley.
Shawn attended San Jose Christian College.
Shawn began writing and journaling, when she discovered, that her first child, named Jonah, was autistic. Some time later after Jonah's death in a car accident in 1984, Strannigan began writing articles on handling grief, which she published in different magazines.
Later, Shawn attended a writers’ conference and took a workshop on writing children’s books. It was after that conference, that she came up with the idea to write her first book "Someday We’ll Play in Heaven", a story about the way her three-year-old daughter coped with the loss of her brother Jonah. Later, Shawn wrote a series, which includes such books, as "One Thing Never Changes", "A Sweater for Candyce" and "Daddy's Old Robe".
