Shibukawa Yoshikane lived in the 1460th. He was grandson of Mitsuyori.
He controlled Musashi Province (near Edo) with his headquarters at Warabi Castle north of Edo.
At the time Shigeuji Ashikaga, residing at Koga in Shimo-osa Province (Ibaraki Pref.) and called Koga Kubo (Kubo means Shogun), defied orders of the Ashikaga Shogunate. Because Yoshikane belonged to a branch of the Ashikaga family and because he was powerful in Kanto, Shogun Yoshimasa ordered him to attack Shigeuji together with Fusaaki Uesugi (1457). Yoshikane, however, advised Yoshimasa to send to Kanto a relative of Yoshimasa capable of holding his own against Shigeuji, whose prestige was high in Kanto. Taking his advice, Yoshimasa sent his third son, Masatomo, to Kanto. Warlords of Kanto welcomed Masatomo and made him stay at Horikoshi in Izu Province (Shizuoka Prefecture). His headquarters was called Horikoshi Gosho (Palace).
Yoshikane's son, Yoshikado, later became the head of the Shiba family and feuded with Yoshitoshi Shiba. Their strife was one cause of the onin Civil War.
