Shigesuke Namikawa was born in 1892 in Kyoto Prefecture.
He graduated from Tokyo University
Was appointed a technical expert attached to the agricultural experimental station in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture (1925). Observing that farmers in Northeastern Japan suffered from great damage done by its cold climate on rice plants. He evolved the "Norin No. 1" strain after five years' efforts. Through planting this strain, rice culture became possible in cold areas where it had been impossible. Was appointed director of the Chugoku District Wheat Experimental Station in Himeji (1932).
