Medicine had been the family profession for generations. When a boy, he followed his father to Tokyo and studied at the Keio Gijuku, predecessor of Keio University, and the German Language school.
Went to Europe (1883) and studied medicine at Munich and Wurzburg universities. After returning to Japan (1893), he practiced in Nihonbashi in downtown Tokyo. Established the Gastroenteric Hospital (1896) and the Gastroenteric Disease Research Society (1898) and became its president. He was created a baron (1910) on account of the meritorious services rendered by his father.
His father was Sensai, physician of the Hizen Clan.
