Education
After graduating from Tokyo University with a degree in Hindu philosophy in 1921, specialized in the history of Buddhism and then proceeded to Oxford University for further studies in 1923.
Career
Upon return rejoined his alma mater as an assistant professor in 1928, to become the professor in 1942. The same year he was conferred a doctorate, Litt.D., for his thesis titled "Thoughts of Chūdō" (The Middle Way). Was an emeritus professor at Tokyo University.
