Sone was government official of Tango Province (Kyoto Prefecture). Because Sone was a secretary of Tango Province he was occasionally known by the nicknames Sotango (a combination of the first character of his name with the name of the province) and Sotan (a combination of the first characters of both his name and the province).
He wrote many poems lamenting his hard luck. His works are collected in Sotanshu, which was compiled by himself. One of his works is contained in Hyakunin Isshu (One Hundred Poems By One Hundred Poets).
Sone was known as an eccentric, arrogant and isolent individual with numerous anecdotes told about him.
