Joined the Red Army, 1918. In the early 1920s, communist partisan in Western Belorussia (then Poland). Returned to the Soviet Union, and became a Cheka and GPU official.
During the Spanish Civil War, NKVD official in Spain, 1937-1939. After his return to the USSR, continued his NKVD work. During World War II, sent as an NKVD controller of partisans to the rear of the German Army in Belorussia.
Head of the partisan network near Minsk, 1942-1944. One of the most successful NKVD agents dealing in terror during the war.
