Sukemori Taira was born in 1161. He was the son of Shigemori.
He was trusted by ex-Emperor Goshirakawa and was appointed Lieutenant General of the Right Imperial Guard and Kurodo-no-Kami (Chief Custodian of the Imperial Treasury). After Minamoto warriors rose against the Tairas under the leadership of Yoritomo (1180), he fought them under Tomomori, his uncle. He routed the forces of Yoshitsune Yamamoto and Yoshikane Kashiwagi. Killed himself in defeat in the Battle of Dannoura (1185).
