Swee-Ping Chia was born on the12th of November 1945 in Pantai Remis, Perak, Malaysia; the son of Boo-Huat and Lang-Ing (Ong) Chia.

In 1967, Swee-Ping received a degree of Bachelor of Science with honors from the University of Malaya. In 1968 he graduated from the University of Illinois with a Master of Science degree. He received a degree of Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Illinois, 1972.
From 1972-1980 Swee-Ping Chia worked as a Lecturer at the University of Malaya. He was an Assistant editor of Malaysian Journal Sciences, 1977-1985. He worked as the Editor of Journal Fizik Malaysia, since 1984. Also Swee-Ping Chia held a position of an associate professor, 1980-1992 and professor, 1992-1999 at the University of Malaya. From 1999-2006 Swee-Ping Chia worked as the Vice president of academy affairs at INTI International University College, Nilai, Malaysia. He served as an Academy advisor at INTI International University College, Subang Jaya, Malaysia, 1987-1999.
Swee-Ping Chia worked as a Director research on science and technical at Huazi Resource and Research Center, Kuala Lumpur, 1987-2000. He was a visiting scientist at International Center for Theoretical Physics in 1974, 1975, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1996, 1998.
Swee-Ping Chia worked as a Visiting professor at the Center for Particle Theory at the University of Texas, 1981-1982. He was a Visiting expert, scientist at the Institute of Physics, Academia Sinica, Taiwan, 1983 and in 1995. Also Swee-Ping Chia was a visiting professor at the University of Paris, 1996.
Also from 1994-1999 Swee-Ping Chia worked as the Executive editor of Malaysian Journal of Science.
From 1991-1994 he was a Chairman of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations at the Institute of Physics and vice president since 1995. From 1978 to 1982 he was a Treasurer at Southeast Asia Theoretical Physics Association. Since 2000, he is a Council of the Association of Asia-Pacific Physical Societies and also since 2005, Swee-Ping Chia was an Honorary treasurer of the Association of Asia-Pacific Physical Societies. Nowadays he is a Professor at University of Malaya.
He was a member of Asian Committee Future Accelerator,1975; member of the Association of Asia-Pacific Physical Societies, 2000. He was a Fellow of Malaysian Institute of Physics, Institute Physics United Kingdom, Academy of Sciences Malaysia, Association of Southeast Asian Nations Institute of Physics, International Center Theoretical Physics, Southeast Asia Theoretical Physics Association.
Swee-Ping is married to Ming-Chu Wu on the 31st of January 1970 and has 4 children.
