Tadatsuna Ashikaga was born in 1180.
The warrior joined the forces of Yoritomo Minamoto and fought in the battles of the Fuji River and Ukishima-ga-hara. He controled the six districts in Kozuke Province (Gumma Prefecture) but was defeated in a campaign against Tomomasa Koyama. He fled to western Japan. It is unknown where he died.
Said to be descendants of Toda Tawara (Hidesato Fujiwara), his family lived fo r generations in Shimotsuke Province (Tochigi Prefecture). Known by the name of Matataro Tawara, he was known fo r his physical prowess. His teeth were said to have been more than one inch long, his voice to have been audible for miles around and his strength to have equalled one hundred men's. He first belonged to the forces of the Taira family, but later transfered his allegiance to Mochihito-O, when he rose in revolt against the Taira family (1180) and led the van in the famous crossing of the Uji River.
