Tadayoshi Shimazu was born in 1840. Son of Hisamitsu.
He was Lord of the Shigetomi Clan, a branch of the Satsuma Clan. Like his predecessor, he worked for the restoration of the Imperial regime.
Tadayoshi Shimazu mobilized all troops of his clan for the Imperial campaign against the Shogunate (1868). After the restoration he and the lords of Choshu, Tosa and Hizen handed over their territories to the Court ahead of other feudal lords (1869). Tadayoshi was appointed governor of Kagoshima Prefecture and made a Prince (1884).
