Tennō Gofukakusa was born on June 28, 1243. He was also known as Hisahito and was the third son of Emperor Gosaga. His mother was Kisshi Fujiwara.
In 1246, Gofukakusa Tennō ascended the Throne. In 1259, he abdicated. Gofukakusa Tennō reigned from 1246 to 1259.
Although he was the legitimate successor to Emperor Gosaga, 88th emperor, and his descendants were entitled to the Throne, Gosaga attempted to make the descendants of his younger brother, Emperor Kameyama, eligible to the Throne. After Emperor Gosaga's death, Tokiyori Hojo, the Shogunate Prime Minister, entreated ex-Emperor Kameyama to make Prince Hirohito (later Emperor Fushimi), the son of Gofukakusa, the Crown Prince of Emperor Gouda. The line of Emperors in this period is as follows (figures in brackets denote numerical order): (88) Emperor Gosaga, (89) Emperor Gofukakusa, (90) Emperor Kameyama, (91) Emperor Gouda, (92) Emperor Fushimi.
On August 17, 1304, at the age of 61 Gofukakusa Tennō died. He was buried in Kyoto.
This 13th-century sovereign was named after the 9th-century Emperor Ninmyōand go- (後), translates literally as "later", and thus he could be called the "Later Emperor Fukakusa". The Japanese word go has also been translated to mean the "second one"; and in some older sources, this emperor may be identified as "Fukakusa, the second", or as "Fukakusa II".
He married Fujiwara no Kimiko, who became Empress consort of Japan.
