Tetsujiro Inoue was born in Fukuoka Prefecture.
At first studied Chinese classics under Tokuzan Nakamura and entered Tokyo Kaisei School (1875). Later graduated from Tokyo University (1878) and a few years later returned to his alma mater as assistant professor (1882). At this time became interested in poetry and together with Shoichi Toyama and Ryokichi Yatabe created a movement for a new style in poetry.
Later Tetsujiro Inoue proceeded to Germany for further studies (1884), and on returning home rejoined his alma ruater as professor (1890). Tetsujiro Inoue was a Dean of Tokyo University Faculty of Literature and began studying Eastern philosophy with Western methods. Member of Cultural investigation Committee and of House of Peers (1923). Edited such magazines as "Eastern Art and Science" and "Light in the Far East." Among his numerous works are "New Theory on Ethics," "Lectures on Western Philosophy" and "Short Biography of Kanko (Michizane Sugawara)."
