Achievements include research in quantitative assessment of cardiac myocyte apoptosis in tissue sections using fluorescence-based tecniques enhanced with counterstains. Research in apoptosis of endothelial cells which precedes and induces myocyte cell apoptosis in ischaemia/reperfusion injury. Research in different signaling pathways inducing apoptosis in endothelial cells and cardiac myocytes during ischaemia/reperfusion.
Research in description of cardioprotection mediated by urocortin, which promotes hemodynamic and bioenergetic recovery and improves cell survival in the isolated rat heart exposed to ischemia/reperfusion. Discovery of minocycline as a new cardioprotective agent and description of its molecular mechanism of action.
