Togo Yoshida (original family name: Hatano) was born in 1864 in Echigo. He was adopted by the Yoshida family.
Togo Yoshida was a student of Yonekichi Miyake.
With no particular education Togo Yoshida began his career as a teacher at an elementary school. After a tour of Hokkaido Tōgo Yoshida moved to Tokyo to join the editorial staff of Yomiuri Shimbun (newspaper) for whom he wrote political commentaries which were well received. He was war correspondent Sino-Japanese War. After the war, began compiling Japanese Geographical Dictionary. Meantime he taught at Tokyo Semmon Gakko (predecessor of Waseda University).
