In 1906, Masao Kusuyama graduated from Waseda University.
After graduating from the university, Masao Kusuyama began compiling an encyclopedia of literary arts and simultaneously worked on the editorial staff of Yomiuri Shimbun (1910). Later he was chief editor of Shigenobu Okuma's Shin Nippon (1911) and lecturer at his alma mater. Masao Kusuyama left to join the editorial staff of Fuzambo Publishing-Co to continue work on his encyclopedia. He wrote many plays and books for juveniles. Among his works are Nippon Dowa Hogyokushu (Japanese Fairy Tales) and "12 Lessons in Modern Drama."
