Tokiuji Yamana was born in 1303 in Japan. He was the eldest son of Masauji Yamana.
During the Genko Affair (civil war between Emperor Godaigo and Shogunate) Tokiuji Yamana moved to Kamakura to protect Prince Morikuni (1331). Later he followed Takauji Ashikaga to Kyushu and restored peace and order there after defeat ing the army of Masashige Kusunoki of South Dynasty at Minatogawa (1336).
Later Tokiuji Yamana was defeated by Masatsura Kusunoki, the son of Masashige, at Kawachi (Osaka Prefecture) and had to retreat to Kyono (1348). Shortly after this he fell out with Takauji and Yoshiakira Ashikaga over some land dispute and joined the Yoshino Court (South Dynasty) and fought for them in western Japan. Later through the efforts of Yoriyuki Hosokawa he patched up his quarrel with Shogun Yoshiakira and was appointed military commissioner in Tango (Kyoto Prefecture) and Izumo ( Shimane Prefecture) provinces and had 11 other provinces under his control. Came to be known as Rokobuichi-dono (ruler of one-sixth of Japan).
