Tomochika Ikeda was born in Tokyo, the son of Kenzo Ikeda, an ex-retainer of Iyo Clan in Ehime Prefecture.

Career
After graduating from Tokyo University (1901) with a diploma in agriculture made efforts to improve the study of horticulture in this country. Later rejoined his alma mater as assistant professor (1906) and was placed in charge of the horticulture class.
