Tomomasa Oyama was born in 1158.
In 1180, at the command of Prince Mochihito, he became a follower of Yoritomo Minamoto and then Noriyori Minamoto and fought the Taira family.
He fought Yasuhira Eujiwara (1189) and became governor of Harima (Hyogo Prefecture) (1199). He then suppressed the rebellion of the Hiki family in cooperation with Shigetada Hatakeyama.
In the Jokyu War (1221), he stayed in Kamakura as a senior retainer and chief strategist.
