Torajiro Takagaki was born on February 26, 1890 in Hiroshima Prefecture.
He graduated from Semmonbu (Junior College Department) of Tokyo Higher Commercial School (1915). He studied in Europe and America as overseas student of Education Ministry (1916-1919).
He became assistant professor (1920) and then professor of Tokyo University of Commerce. He retired from service at governmental schools (1936). He served then as president of Koryo University (1946-52). He was elected member of Japan Science Council (1949) and was appointed chief director of Nihon Gakujutsu Shinkokai (Japan Science Promotion Society) and became director of Mitsubishi Bank (1953).
He held additional posts of emeritus professor of Hitotsubashi University and president of Kinyugakukai (Financial Science Society). Books include Ginko-ron (On Banks) and Kahei-ron Nyumon (An Introduction to Money).
