Toyotaka Komiya studied at Tokyo University, where received a degree in German literature.
After graduating from Tokyo University, Toyotaka Komiya came to be known as a German scholar through his writings and literary criticisms. He also wrote poems and novels. As one of the most distinguished pupils of Soseki Natsume, he was appointed instructor at Keio University. Later in 1923 Toyotaka Komiya proceeded to Germany for further studies. Returning home the following year he was appointed professor at Tohoku University. After the war, Toyotaka was appointed President of Tokyo School of Music, but soon after resigned due to some differences in opinion.
