Tsuneuji Kanaya was born in Kozuke (Gumma Prefecture).
Tsuneuji Kanaya distinguished himself on the battle field early in the Kemmu Era (1335) when he suppressed the revolt of Takauji Ashikaga against Emperor Godaigo. Later with the death of Yoshisuke Wakiya (1342) he became chief of the loyalist army at Iyo (Ehime Prefecture) and fought many land and sea battles against Yoriharu Hosokawa. He committed suicide later when with a band of 60 men he tried to attack the enemy’s troops that had entrenched themselves at the Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine, pear Kyoto, and was beaten (1351).
