Uemonnosuke Masuda studied under Shoin Yoshida at Shokasonjuku School.
Under clan orders Uemonnosuke Masuda began taking active part in national affairs, till he was caught in the political upheaval and he had to return home with Sanetomi Sanjo and six other courtiers (1863). The following year, however, as captain of clan forces and together with Echigo Fukuhara and Shinano Kunishi attempted to attack the pro-Sliogun forces in Kyoto but he was defeated in the battle at Hamaguri Gate and he committed suicide in Tokuyama, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
