Ujikane Toda was born in 1655 in Japan. He was the son of Kazuaki.
Ujikane Toda served the Tokugawa family, and succeeded his father to become Lord of Zeze in Omi (Shiga Prefecture) (1604). After distinguishing himself in the Battle of Osaka was made Lord of Amagasaki in Setts (Hyogo Prefecture) with a fief of 50.000 koku of rice (1616). Was regarded again and made Lord of Ogaki (Gifu Prefecture) with a fief of 100,000 koku (1634).
Stood out for his gallantry during the war with Shimabara as joint commander with Nobutsuna Matsudaira at Kyushu (1638). Taking to himself the name of Jokan he entered a monastery as a priest after bequeathing his estate to his heir (1651). His services to his clan were outstanding. He made them prosper by advocating economy, colonization and flood control.
