In June 1941 Vladimir graduated from the 6th grade of the secondary school No. 4 in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) and then had been studying for 2 years at the eight-year school in Petropavlovsk (Kazakh SSR). Vladimir Alexandrovich Shatalov also studied at the 6th Voronezh Special School of the Air Force in Karaganda and Lipetsk and at the Kachin Red Banner VAUL named after A.F. Myasnikov on the first category. In 1956 he graduated with honors from the Command Faculty of the Red Banner VVA USSR Armed Forces.
Before enrolling in a group of cosmonauts, Vladimir Alexandrovich Shatalov worked as a pilot instructor of piloting of 706 training aviation regiment of Kachinsky VAUL and then as a pilot-instructor of combat use. He served as a deputy squadron commander, squadron commander, since May 1960 - deputy commander of the aviation regiment in the combat units of the Air Force. Since February 1961 he started working as a senior inspector-pilot of the combat training department of the 48th Air Army of the Odessa Military District.
In 1963 Shatalov was enlisted in a group of cosmonauts of the Air Force CTC for the post of listener-cosmonaut. Later he worked as a commander of the third (backup) crew and as the second pilot of the second crew of the “Voskhod-3” spacecraft, commander of the third crew of the passive spacecraft "Soyuz" under the program of docking of two ships in orbit and in 1968 as commander of the backup crew of the “Soyuz-6” and “Soyuz-8” spacecraft (together with A. Eliseev), “Soyuz-7” spacecraft (together with A. Eliseev and P. Kolodin). In 1971 Shatalov acted as a commander of the third crew for the flight on the program of the first expedition to the DOS-1 “Salyut” together with V. Volkov and V. Patsayev.
Vladimir Alexandrovich Shatalov realized 3 cosmic flights. In the first flight he worked as a as a commander of the "Soyuz-4"spacecraft, during which he performed the docking with the "Soyuz-5" spacecraft. In the second one he was a a commander of the "Soyuz-8" spacecraft. The docking of "Soyuz-7" and "Soyuz-8" failed to fulfill due to the failure of the system of rapprochement and docking of the "Igla" on the "Soyuz-8" spacecraft. During the second flight he acted as a commander of the "Soyuz-10" spacecraft. The world's first docking with the orbital station ("Salute"). However, due to the breakdown of the docking module of the spacecraft, it was impossible to make the complete tightening of the ship and the station and to ensure the tightness of the junction. The transition to the OS "Salyut" was canceled, the early landing was completed.
In 1971 he dropped out of the cosmonaut group due to his appointment to the post of Assistant Commander of the Air Force for the preparation and provision of space flights.
