He graduated from the History Department of Moscow State University .
After participating in the Great Patriotic War he worked as a teacher of the Department of General History of the Higher Party School (under the Central Committee of the CPSU).
Then he was a teacher and associate professor of the Department of Genereal History of Voronezh State University and at the same time worked as an editor of a large-circulation newspaper "For scientific cadres" (1947-1949).
He was the chief bibliographer of the USSR State Library named after V.I. Lenin.
In 1960-1962 worked as the senior lecturer of the Department of the New and Modern History of the Voronezh State University.
Since 1962, he has been a research fellow at the Institute of Soviet History of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Professor of the Department of General History of the Moscow Pedagogical Open Institute (1985-1990).
