(During the Cold War, political leaders, economists, and p...)
During the Cold War, political leaders, economists, and professional journalists in the Soviet Union ostensibly ignored Western research on the Soviet system. Most copies of Western studies which made their way into the Soviet Union were confiscated. However, under a veil of secrecy, the Central Committee of the Communist Party directed a vast program of identifying important Western studies, translating or summarizing them into Russian, reviewing them in classified publications, and distributing them to limited numbers of trusted officials. Contrary to earlier views, it clearly documents that Western Sovietological studies were in fact closely followed in the USSR and often influenced Soviet decison makers.
