After finishing school with a gold medal in Kirov, he tried to enter the prestigious Moscow Aviation Institute in 1960. Yakovlev was to work at the Moscow machine-building plant "Red October" as a fitter. Yakovlev headed a special Komsomol operational forces that he created by himself. In 1967 Vladimir Mikhailovich graduated with distinction from the MAI. He signed a distribution for the position of an engineer in the design office of Energomash in Khimki.
