In 1979 he finished 10 classes of the secondary school in Yavas village.
Since October 15, 1983 Vladimir had worked at the disposal of the commander of the Odessa Air Force. Since December 5, 1983 he had been working as a pilot of 684 gv. IAP 119 IAD, Tiraspol, Moldova, Odessa VO. On November 30, 1984 he became a pilot of 161 IAP 119 IAD Air Force, Limanskoye township, Odessa VO. Since December 10, 1986 he had been working as the senior pilot in the same place.
On March 26, 1987 – he was recommended for the position in the cosmonaut detachment of the Air Force CTC (8th set) by GMPC. Since August 30, 1989 Vladimir Dezhurov has been working as a test cosmonaut of the 1st group.
From September 1989 to February 1994 he was under training within the test-cosmonaut team. From November 1997 to October 2000 he was serving as a commander of the Soyuz TM spacecraft of the backup crew of the 1st expedition to the ISS together with M. Tyurin and K. Bowersox (USA).
From March 14, 1995 to July 5, 1995 he performed his 1st flight as commander of the crew at the Soyuz TM-21 spacecraft, Mir and Space Shuttle Atlantis the EO-18 program together with G. Strekalov and N. Tagardom (USA). From June 29 to July 4, 1995, he also had been working with A. Soloviev, N. Budarin (EO-19), and from June 29 to July 7 - with American astronauts - R. Gibson, Ch. Prekurt, E. Baker, G. Harbo and B. Dunbar (STS-71, the first docking of the Shuttle Mir). Dezhurov performed three open spacewalks with the duration of 18 hours. 12 min.
